Sixteen

An hour later, the team had re-dusted the entirety of Annmarie’s apartment, including the hallway, the doors the security footage showed Frost using, and the elevator. There were no fingerprints. Nikki wasn’t surprised that Frost had been smart enough to use something to cover his hands, but she couldn’t help but feel disappointed. And she was starting to feel angry at herself: how had her connection to Frost been so obvious and yet so hard to see?

Nikki debated calling her bureau chief, but she didn’t want to lose control of the case. As long as she didn’t hamper the investigation, Nikki wasn’t about to take a back seat. The only thing keeping her going right now was the thought of putting cuffs on Frost and ensuring he rotted in a cell.

Nikki still hadn’t seen the picture of her mother again. Courtney had bagged it immediately, and Nikki could see the uncharacteristic anger in her movements as she’d been working. “There’s a timestamp on it,” she said. “It looks like it was taken with a basic but decent camera. Printed out on Kodak paper.”

“It must have been a small camera, because he was able to stand and take the picture without anyone noticing,” Nikki said.

“How do you know that?” Courtney asked gently. “You said yourself that day is a blur.”

“I don’t know for sure,” Nikki admitted. “I know some people take pictures at funerals, but I can’t see anyone noticing that and not saying something. My parents’ murders were a sensational news story at the time, and anyone who saw that might have thought he was a reporter or something.”

“Maybe Annmarie saw him,” Liam mused, coming over too. “Maybe that’s how she figured this all out. She could have demanded to know what he was doing. Or maybe she said nothing at the time but she remembered recently. The position of Frost’s victims’ bodies is well known—maybe they jogged her memory.”

“And then what? If that’s all there was, then why would he have tracked her down and killed her?” Nikki’s voice cracked. “I keep trying to remember everyone at the funeral, but my mind’s blank. We didn’t have a lot of extended family, either. I should call the funeral home. Maybe someone there remembers seeing something. What time is it?” She grabbed her phone, noticing a missed call and a message. “The sketch artist should be doing the composite right now. We’ll have plenty to throw at Frost at the press conference. What time is it scheduled for tomorrow?”

“10 a.m.,” Liam said. “But hear me out on something.” Liam could tell just how eager Nikki was to leave. “We now know that Frost’s motivations somehow revolve around you. But we also know he’s getting bolder. He killed Annmarie, but he must have panicked—hence why some of the scene differed from his previous murders. And now coming here again. This picture was clearly left to get a major response from you specifically. Seeing you talk about him on television is exactly what he wants.
